MADA Celebrating 25th Year

M4M

| of Service to Montreal's Jewish Community

On Wednesday, November 22, at Shaar Hashomayim Congregation, MADA Community Center celebrated its annual gala, marking the organization’s 25th year of service to Montreal’s Jewish community. Close to five hundred people attended the event, whose honoree was the community activist and philanthropist, Marc Kakon. The guests enjoyed delicious food, open bar and were entertained by the famous Gregory Charles.

The evening highlighted MADA’s growth since its inception, demonstrating how it became the main address to fighting hunger in Montreal. Awards were given to nine exceptional supporters who brought their wisdom to change the face of poverty in our community: Mr. Andy Harper, Brenda and Shmuel Gewurz, Helen and Stanley Cons, Ricky and David Merovitz, Anat and Gary Richman, and Andrew Christopoulos, president of Sysco Services Alimentaires du Canada Inc. “Our goal is to strive and reach the other 80% of Montreal’s Jewish poor, who desperately need the help MADA can give them. By saving one life, we are saving a world!” said Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, MADA’s Executive Director.

As international singer Enrico Macias sings, “Quand on a un frère malheureux, on ne peut pas fermer les yeux” said Mr. Kakon MADA Gala Honoree. “Open your heart to help MADA continues on this beautiful journey…”.

Special thanks to MADA’s committees and to the generosity of the Montreal community for their support in making our annual gala, a great success.

Montreal had been abuzz for months as it prepared for its annual Masterpieces 4 MADA gala. The community rallied together to support this important cause. Many collected auction prizes, schools prepared beautiful art pieces and artists donated their artwork. Their hard work culminated in a beautiful event at the Windsor Ballrooms on May 19. The camaraderie, rich food and endless cocktails made it an event to remember. But, the most beautiful part of the evening was the gathering of Montreal’s finest, joined in unity, to fight hunger.

Famous comedians Orny Adams and Jim Breuer had the crowd in tears, demonstrating how we too can “Laugh Away the Tears.”
The Gala was led by the articulate Debra Arbec, head anchor at CBC News.

Thanks to the generous Montreal community, over $200 000 was raised to feed the needy through MADA’s cafeteria.

Looking forward to seeing you next year. Together, we can fight hunger!

Turning Tears Into Laughter

M4M

| 5th Annual Art Auction

MADA Helps Fight Hunger by “Turning Tears Into Laughter” at 5th Annual Art Auction and Comedy Night.

The MADA Community center, Quebec’s largest kosher soup kitchen and food bank, hosted its 5th annual Masterpieces 4 MADA (M4M) Art Auction Comedy Night on Tuesday June 10th, 2014 at the Corona Theatre. Sponsors, volunteers and supporters attended this inspiring evening which not only showcased and auctioned unique masterpieces created by community artists and students but also featured a hilarious comedy show.  Over $150,000 was raised to help fund the MADA cafeteria and two long-time MADA donors were moved to donate a brand new truck for deliveries!

The goal of the event was to raise funds to provide food for those less fortunate and to create awareness about poverty. “So far, our cafeterias serve 298,183 meals a year to our patrons, but the referrals continue and we are obliged to accommodate more people – many more!”  said Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, MADA  Director.

Guests were treated to delicious food and drinks as well as a side-splittingly funny comedic line-up featuring local actor and comedian Joey Elias as Master of Ceremonies, Just for Laughs regulars David Acer and Phil Shuchat and headliner Wendy Liebman, a regular guest on late night television with her own half-hour specials for HBO and Comedy Central.

This year the event was Co-Chaired by the dynamic and devoted MADA volunteers Fran Derkson and Anat Mordehay.  “It was incredibly moving to see the community come together for such an important cause.  As weekly volunteers, we see first-hand how essential MADA’s services are. We are honoured to be part of the MADA family and committed to helping raise much needed funds to sustain and support this invaluable organization.”

Thank you to everyone for making this event so special and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

The inspiring evening will begin with an auction of one-of-a-kind masterpieces donated by artists and students. Guests will then be treated to a hilarious comedic line-up featuring local actor and comedian Joey Elias as Master of Ceremonies, Just for Laughs regulars David Acer and Phil Shuchat and headliner Wendy Liebman, a regular guest on late night television with her own half-hour specials for HBO and Comedy Central.

The goal of the event is to raise funds to provide food for those less fortunate and to create awareness about poverty. “So far, our cafeterias serve 298,183 meals a year to our patrons, but the referrals continue and we are obliged to accommodate more people – many more!” says Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen, Mada Director.

M4M will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 at the Corona Theatre, 2490 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest. There will be an open bar and delicious food as well as valet parking.

M4M gathers and involves our peers, elders and students of all ages as they contribute their talents and works of art in an effort to raise money to support MADA’s quest to feed the needy in the community. Students at participating Montreal schools, such as: Jewish People and Peretz School, Hebrew Foundation School, and Elizabeth Ballantyne have designed unique art reflecting this year’s theme “Let’s Turn Tears Into Laughter”.
